Veteran politician Tofail Ahmed has passed away. One of the organizers of the 1969 mass uprising and the great liberation war, he died at the capital’s Square Hospital at 3:30 pm on Monday. He was 82 years old.
Tofail Ahmed’s son-in-law Dr. Towhiduzzaman Tuhin told reporters at 4 pm today that Tofail Ahmed passed away at the hospital today while undergoing treatment.
Family members and close friends said that Tofail Ahmed had been suffering from various complications related to old age for a long time. At the time of his death, he left behind a daughter and numerous well-wishers.
The Square Hospital authorities said in a press release that Tofail Ahmed was admitted to the hospital on September 24 last year with pneumonia-related breathing problems, heart disease and physical weakness.
Tofail Ahmed was born on October 22, 1943 in Koralia village of Dakhin Dighaldi Union of Bhola Sadar Upazila. From 1967 to 1969, he was the VP of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). He became known nationwide for his leadership role in the mass uprising of 1969.
In the 1970 elections, at the age of 27, Tofail Ahmed was elected as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan. He was elected as a member of parliament 9 times. He also served as a minister several times. He was a member of the advisory council of the currently banned Awami League.
