Onion prices have started to fall slightly in the wholesale market due to the news of onion imports from India. However, the impact has not yet been felt in the retail market, as a result of which this daily essential product is being sold at high prices.
A search in Khatunganj, Chittagong, found that onions were sold at 110-115 taka per kg last week, but now the price has come down to 100-105 taka depending on the quality. Traders say that the prices have decreased slightly at the wholesale level due to the announcement of imports as well as a slight decrease in demand. Hamidullah Mia Market Traders’ Welfare Association General Secretary Md. Idris said that the prices will gradually normalize when imported onions come to the market.
However, onions are still being sold at 120 to 130 taka per kg in the city’s retail markets. Retail traders say that it is not possible to reduce the price now because the onions they bought earlier were of high price. Although the government has allowed limited import, the consignment of imported onions has not yet reached the country.
